Position
Requirements
SPECIALIST COUNSELOR
Activity Specialists
are needed in many areas of camp: waterfront (waterski, canoeing
and swimming) instructors, arts & crafts, pottery, drama, fishing,
nature, athletics, archery, music, photography, video, Web based
newspaper, tennis, and more. They are often assigned to live in
cabins with campers when not engaged in their specialty.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Specialized
training and any relevant certification in activity area
- Current CPR
and standard first aid certifications preferred
- Enthusiasm
and ability to teach and work with children outdoors
- Ability to
accept guidance and supervision
- Good moral
character, motivated, responsible and adaptable
- Enthusiasm,
selflessness, sense of humor, patience and self-control
- Nonsmokers
preferred
- Completed
at least two years of college
Immediate Supervisor/Responsible
To:
- Program Director
- Group Leader
General Responsibility:
- To coordinate
and lead a specific activity, maintaining professional standards
that lead to a high quality skills program.
- To enhance
camper knowledge and skill level in the specified activity.
- To provide
a safe, successful and enjoyable experience for campers and staff.
Specific Responsibilities:
- During staff
training, organize specific activity area and program plan.
Take preseason and postseason inventory.
- Submit orders
for any supplies or equipment needed to the Program Director for
approval.
- Participate
in weekly staff meetings and other meetings designated by supervisor.
- Conduct daily
check of activity area and equipment for safety and cleanliness.
- To enhance
individual skill level of campers in a specific activity.
- Encourage
creativity and individuality in participants.
- Provide awards
and certifications appropriately earned by participants.
- Keep records
of participants' progress and improvement in skill level.
- Prepare specific
lesson plan or project for each activity session.
- Responsible
for cleaning area and packing all supplies upon the end of the
season.
- Evaluate
current season and make any suggestions for improvement for the
following season.
- Assist and
participate in special camp-wide activities.
- These are
not the only duties to be performed in this position. Some duties
may be reassigned and other duties may be assigned as required
at the discretion of the Camp Directors
Essential Functions:
- Ability to
clearly and effectively communicate, teach and work with different
age and skill levels.
- Ability to
observe the behavior of campers and staff to monitor safety and
enforce appropriate rules and regulations and to intervene or
assist appropriately.
- Visual and
auditory ability to identify and respond to any environmental
hazard or emergency.
- Able to train
staff efficiently to assist in the specific activity.
- Physical
ability to respond to situations requiring first aid.
- Possess the
physical strength and endurance to maintain constant supervision
of activity.

ADMINISTRATIVE
STAFF
All areas other than
counselors and activity specialists are needed in such areas as
office administration, bookkeepers, secretaries, cooks, dining hall
staff, etc. Administrative staff may also be assigned to live in
cabins with campers. If interested in one of these positions, indicate
this on your staff application.

- Education
or practical training necessary for licensing or certification

- Responsible
